Process: Here’s what to expect

Applications for admission close on 30 November 2020.

If an applicant fits the initial criteria, they will be contacted for an interview that will take place in December 2020 at the Media24 office in Cape Town, or by telephone for students living outside of the Western Cape.

All applications will be vetted by the selection panel, made up of representatives from Eat Out and external industry experts.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by no later than 30 January 2021.

The first semester will commence on 15 February 2021 at the Media24 office in Cape Town CBD.

Please ensure the following before completing your application:

I have read the information relating to the Eat Out learnership and understand what is required.

  • I have completed this form myself.
  • I am available for 12 months to study and work part-time in a restaurant to complete the practical component of this learnership.
  • I have passed Grade 11 or have a Matric.
  • I am a South African Citizen.
  • I don’t have the financial means to afford an education.
  • I am between the ages of 18 and 34.
  • I am currently unemployed but have a deep desire to work in the restaurant industry.
  • I can read, write and communicate in English.

What will you learn?

This qualification has been developed for people in the food and beverage service industry (hospitality). It brings together elements of food and drink preparation and service, as well as supervision. This qualification is applicable to all hospitality sectors, from small restaurants to large-scale hotels. To be eligible, completion of Grade 11 is required.

Modules that we will cover:

  • Personal development
  • Hygiene in food preparation, cooking and storage
  • Communication and customer care
  • Stock control and finances
  • Food and drink service (table/bar/counter)
  • Supervision and First Aid
  • Knife skills
  • Cooking: Preparation, baking, frying, grilling, hot/cold, boiling, poaching and steaming

Other learnings will also include:

  • Basic marketing and social media
  • Food styling basics
  • Industry chef masterclasses
  • Customer service (provided by Etiquette Hospitality)
